Penal Reform Ethiopia

Penal Reform Ethiopia (PRE) is a leading organization addressing the rights and well-being of children living in prison with their mothers in Ethiopia. Through a child-sensitive prison model, PRE works to improve living conditions, care, and developmental outcomes for these children. Its interventions include the provision of essential in-kind support such as nutritious food, clothing, hygiene kits, and educational materials, alongside capacity-building trainings for prison staff, incarcerated mothers, and caregivers on child rights, early childhood development, psychosocial support, and gender sensitivity. PRE’s work has strengthened collaboration between prison authorities and child protection actors and contributed to increased awareness, improved caregiving practices, and more protective prison environments. Through ongoing monitoring and advocacy, PRE continues to influence policy and practice to ensure the dignity and rights of children living in custody are upheld.
