LA CANA is a women-led organization founded in 2016 to transform prisons in Mexico into spaces of opportunity through a comprehensive, gender-responsive social reintegration model. Working across more than ten states, LA CANA supports incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women through programs that combine paid employment, psychosocial support, legal assistance, and skills development. Inside prison, LA CANA provides paid work opportunities alongside technical and entrepreneurial training, enabling women to achieve economic independence through dignified employment or by starting small businesses. Their model also includes strong legal accompaniment and access to justice, recognizing that legal support is essential for protecting women’s rights and supporting successful reintegration. After release, through LA CANA’s reintegration and post-release follow-up programs, they continue accompanying women and their families. Working directly with children and caregivers outside prison, LA CANA helps reduce the intergenerational impact of incarceration, strengthening family stability and supporting healthier transitions back into community life. Through the Motherhood and Childhood in Prison Program, LA CANA accompanies pregnant women and mothers raising children inside prison, strengthening parenting skills and promoting conditions that safeguard children’s health, development, and rights. Each year, LA CANA impacts more than 1,000 women and their families. Their programs have achieved a recidivism rate of just 2%, compared to estimated recidivism levels of around 20% for the general prison population in Mexico, advancing pathways toward dignity, justice, and long-term social reintegration.
